Bayern could hardly have imagined a better start to the second half of the 2005-6 campaign. Three days after sealing a berth in the DFB German Cup semi-finals with a 3-2 victory over Mainz, the champions turned in a gala display in an emphatic 3-1 away win against Borussia Monchengladbach on Friday evening as Bundesliga hostilities resumed in the new calendar year.

"That was exhibition stuff for long periods," delighted general manager Uli Hoeneß declared after the leaders stretched their undefeated run to 11 matches in front of a 54,019 capacity crowd at Borussia Park. "We've laid down a marker. Now it's up to our rivals to show what they can do," remarked chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. Second-placed Hamburg promptly fell 2-1 against strugglers Nuremberg on Saturday and now lie a daunting nine points behind the men from Munich.
